Important Road Information

  • Road 550 is a summer-only F road* suitable for 4×4 vehicles. It’s closed from October to June. You must be prepared for the challenging driving conditions you might encounter on this road.
  • Route to Húsafell: Take Road 1 towards Borgarnes, then switch to Road 50 and 518.

*F-roads in Iceland are rugged mountain roads, accessible only during summer and suitable exclusively for 4×4 vehicles due to their challenging terrain and seasonal closures.

Detailed Directions to Húsafell

1. From Reykjavik, drive north on Road 1 towards Borgarnes, passing through a tunnel under Hvalfjordur fjord after about 25 minutes.

2. Before reaching Borgarnes, turn right onto Road 50, continuing for 33 km through Kleppjárnsreykir village.

3. Road 50 becomes Road 518 past the Deildartunguhver hot spring intersection. Optionally, stop for 15 minutes at Deildartunguhver.

4. Drive another 29 km, passing Reykholt, to reach Húsafell. Consider stopping at the beautiful Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls, 10 minutes before Húsafell, for at least 30 minutes.

5. After Hraunfossar, turn left from Road 518 to arrive at Húsafell center.

At Húsafell Center

  • Remember, Húsafell is for winter departures (if you book departure from Húsafell in the summer, a highland bus shuttles you up the F-Road to Klaki base camp, where our ice trucks depart from during the June – October months). You will see large Into the Glacier vehicles located in the parking lot, which means you found the right place!
  • Check-in is located at the Húsafell information center, adjacent to Húsafell Bistro and the petrol station. Make sure to check in 15 minutes before the tour starts.
